Artists' Holidays by Geoff Ashworth
Welcome to our friendly island of love, LIKE A PAINTING stirred to life by an early summer breeze, Cyprus is where the simplest of landscapes - poppies dancing in a field outside Paphos - can suddenly turn sublime. No wonder artists are drawn to this corner of southern Cyprus, and why everyone from Roman emperors to the rich and famous has wanted to claim a piece of it But as much as it gives up to those just passing through, Paphos reserves its sweetest self for those who can call it home. Today, Paphos is a growing harbour town. It seduces visitors and residents with its majestic landscape, coastline and delightful villages, where tradition is still a way of life. Cyprus is an artist's dream environment. Whether you are a novice or an accomplished artist, it would be difficult to find more romantic setting for inspiration. Also, why not invite your non-painting partners, so that they too may enjoy the fulfilling and enchanting surroundings. Cyprus is the island of activity, where you can enjoy anything from water-sports and golf, to spectacular hiking and biking - for the shop-a-holic, and lovers of quality wines and cuisine, this friendly island offers so much more. Our painting courses will take you into the unspoilt villages of Cyprus and a sketching tour in the Troodos Mountains, where you will witness the daily rural activities and watch the locals pursuing their traditional crafts - weaving, pottery, lace, candle and basket making. In monasteries, you may be treated to a glimpse of the monks at work in the fields, feeding their animals or, even painting icons. Naturally, Cyprus offers more!
Peace, Unity without Borders
"Peace, unity without borders" Art can prove to be a powerful medium when compiling compelling messages - even to the governments of this troublesome world. Recently, I was inspired to write and illustrate a book, by the simple and effective, words of a song sung to me by Irina and her loving husband. In essence, the song was a plea for the unification of this beautiful island of ours. Their song was neither bitter nor ugly, but like many parents in Cyprus, their words were of love and conservation and of a tearful plea expressing their concern about the future of their family. "It is our belief that all life on earth, and the earth itself, is sacred, that man's heedless abuse of nature will lead to his own destruction. This is a powerful plea for conservation to which every child and every adult must respond. We love this earth, as a newborn child loves its mother's heartbeat. If you take our land against our land against our will, care for it as we have cared for it. Hold in your mind the memory of the land as it was when you took it. Preserve the land and the air and the rivers for your children's children, and love it as we have loved it". Personally, I have no better wish than to live and work in harmony with the laws of nature, its colour, form and perfection.
Wild Ones
"LEARN TO PAINT WITH GEOFF ASHWORTH", marks the first time that he has opened up his studio to painters of all levels. In addition to a practical insight into his work recording the flora and fauna of Cyprus, he also includes instructions on his favourite subjects, ranging from - landscapes, boats, trains to- portraits, people at work and play and their traditional crafts.
Alongside fascinating step by step demonstrations and advice on techniques and materials, Geoff shares his many studio secrets. It is hoped that practising artists, who are seeking an extra dimension to their work, will enjoy the diversity of Geoff's paintings.
Wearing his conversation hat, it is his hope that local huntsmen, when observing his school of budding artists, walking and talking amongst the island's beautiful flora and fauna, will be inspired to swap their hunting rifles for a camera, sketch-pad, easel and paintbrush.
And then begin a lifelong passion for the nature of Cyprus
